Epi Info 3.5.3 Notes

Hello there me!

Currently  stuck using an old version of Epi Info... Thus, some things aren't exactly working properly or logically... I'll list stuff here to preserve my sanity...

- 07/15/2014 -
*Copying: If you copy using hotkeys, Question prompts become multiline. If you copy by clicking the menus, the questions stay single line. The alignment screws a bit but it's tolerable.
*Copying: if the things you're trying to copy surpass a certain length, all the prompts become multiline... (Remediable by Cutting and Pasting back into the page)
**IT'S THE WIDTH  OF THE COPY BOX that's causing all the multilines... -_-
*Can't get it to read commands for Option Prompts correctly... Sticking to Number and rendering it binary...
*So that's what that means! If you double click something in the promt, it becomes the Label for that variable... -_- annoying
*Do not forget to fix the "Font for prompt" before the question appears in the view. Tampering with it afterwards causes the prompt to go multiline...

- 07/18/2014 - after Typhoon Glenda!
*The copy box only has to go through the input boxes and not the whole questions themselves.
*Cutting and pasting can remedy multilines. EXTREMELY HANDY!
*Cutting and pasting screws with the range though. It resets it to the highest number.
*Cutting a group and NOT pasting is an effective way to delete many items at the same time.
*Copying causes changes to field names (to prevent replicates). Cutting does not.
*There's no way to scroll through the pages on the upper right side. Use the Edit -> Go to Page for far pages. This is the only way (?) to change the upper right side pages too.
*There's no way to reorder pages. The best I've come up with is to cut a page's contents and paste it in a new page. Of course this screws with their ranges though...
*The field name sometimes screws with you and resets to using a no-space version of the prompt. This is an illusion. Right click something else before right-clicking what you want and the field name should go back to normal.
*Changing a page name sometimes throws some prompts into disorder. Sometimes...

- 07/22/2014
*You can't reorder pages, but you can use "Insert Page". Inserts before the current page you are viewing.

Applying for a Student Permit @ LTO Las Piñas

FINALLY! The main reason I wanted to start this blog was because I wanted a place to write all this information down where it might be useful for someone (and because most of the other stuff I've read in the internet is either outdated or incomplete... Well, not with as much info as I would have liked anyway)...

Here's some information from someone who went there alone (and totally unprepared).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I. The Place - LTO Las Piñas

If you don't already know what the place looks like, ask the jeepney driver to drop you off there. I dunno, but I was expecting something more... impressive-looking. Good thing the driver notified me when we passed by. Before entering, I panicked a bit. I was getting hungry. A nearby street vendor sold (partially... =|) hard-boiled eggs.

Upon entering, I saw... something. I can't quite describe how disorganized it was. I remember wondering, "What if organelles were this disorganized? We'd probably die..." Yeah I'm nerdy like that... It was here that I realized a few things: 1) This might take a while and 2) There's some food vendors available on-site, as well as some other amenities. So, here's a glance at them for everyone's information.

Badass Ate selling cigarettes next to that ironic sign (thoughtfully modified by a ballpen-wielder to refer to inside the CR)
I was told that this building is a private institution. No taking of pictures inside...
Here's some details posted around the place I took note of that might be useful for others:

SCHEDULE (likely for the whole establishment... the note was posted on top of the cashier)
  • 7:30 am - 2:30 pm (probably operating hours as a whole?)
  • 12:00 nn - 12:30 pm (Lunch Break)
  • 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm (??? Waste of ink?)
MEDICAL EXAMINATION
  • Required for driver's license
  • ₱ 100.00
  • LTO Accredited (duh... Otherwise it wouldn't make sense for them to be next to the place)
XEROX
  • Long - ₱ 3.50
  • Short - ₱ 2.50

Food establishments! Therefore, you don't need to worry much about food. I didn't scout the prices or menu though...

Car Care Center and Car Wash. Just wanted you to know they exist nearby.

II. The Application Process - New Student Permit (Filipino)

Yeah. That was what I applied for. I looked at a bunch of sites before coming, but most of them were not updated anymore. This was helpful, but beware of unupdated sites (particularly with regards to the application form). The form is the first step. Their on-site help desk gives the forms out for free, but accomplishing them takes time. Also, doing it at home makes it easier to provide complete information.

It's always (?) safe to look at the LTO Website first. Actually I did that, but honestly the website turned me off. It seemed unintuitive at the time, so I googled up some other sites. However, don't let this turn you off! The site actually contains the form in use today (if the previous hyperlink is broken, try here and download the "Driver's License Application Form"). Don't let the filename mislead you, the form has a checkbox for "New" and "Student Permit."

For the actual process, it's actually all written here in their website. Don't try the shortcut links you immediately see. You won't be able to scroll back up for some reason (if you do though, you can reload the page. Let Ctrl+F, PageUp, and PageDown be your best friends.

Sooo what happens if you don't read ahead? Well, they have the process and the fees posted in situ:
To be fair to the one who left the C2 bottle, there were no trash cans conveniently nearby... Still not excusable though...
They also have handy infographics above the office windows in case you don't wanna read:

MISCELLANEOUS TIPS:

  • @ Step 1: Prepare a photocopy of you supporting document. My supporting document was my passport. They asked me to photocopy it. I was forced to use the relatively expensive service nearby. I found it odd that it wasn't specified in any of the procedures. Maybe LTO Las Piñas doesn't have it's own xerox machine?
  • You'll notice a reliance on audio cues (number @ Step 2; name @ Step 3 onwards). Stay alert and listen.
  • Do not believe any time estimates nearby. You might frustrate yourself. Prepare an allowance of 1-2 hours.

For reference, I arrived at around 10:45 am. I took nearly 3 hours.

  • The "Driver's Road Safety Pledge" comes in both Filipino and English. Use whatever's comfortable for you. The teller will get frustrated if you can't be heard. Someone after me couldn't read English very well and the teller practically yelled at him. Both versions are below for your reference. I find it odd that it's not posted in the LTO Webste...

They may sound corny, but try to take these seriously. They're for the good of you, other drivers, pedestrians, and everyone else near the roads anyway.

I guess that's all I got so far. After a month, I'll update with getting a non-professional license for Filipinos.

May knowledge empower you! Good luck fellow future drivers!

Tacloban Log

Pet peeve: Damn it! I started this blog to write about my LTO experience at Las Piñas and I haven't touched it in days!! -_- Hahaha...

------
Just finished Leader's Training for Plan Philippines! This more or less officially ends the Plan Philippines Project for me.. If ever I'll be returning to the office, it'll be to goof off with my newfound circle of friends, to greet the personnel I've actually grown fond of, and to generally feel a bit more like the PH student I should've been... oh and to submit any summaries, reports, media I'm still holding on to. Hopefully QE won't ask me to fix the formatting of the paper AGAIN (although I have a distinct feeling he will... Oh well... I'm grateful for this whole experience really. I really learned a lot. This was one of my better life decisions. Thank you also for hooking me up with this gig Dr. PA. =)
"Promoting child rights to end child poverty" (Plan Website, 2014)
May they benefit from the knowledge they gained from the project...

Speaking of these people, I'll be returning to an all night gaming, dancing and sleepover!! Sooo happy I found these guys... But I wonder how I'll be able to wean myself off of them. I don't wanna fall victim to "sepanx," but I don't wanna forget them either. They've made my stay in DEOH so much more awesome. More true friends...
These Wizards are great workmates ^^

I'll be buying pasalubongs tomorrow! Sheeet! I hope I get enough... I have a tendency to underestimate... Actually I think I'll make my list of peeps after I type all this brain fart (whut? =)) )
-------------EDIT
  • 7 Unde
  • 3 others ng unde (not counting Rich and JT)
  • 8 condo
  • 2 Danna, Ysa
  • 4+3 at home
  • 6 + 3? office

  • 9 debs saniel mimi kim borja PA agno ryan 203 baks

-------------
Sooo what else do I write? Might as well my (definite) agendas for next week...

  • Monday - Eye doctor
  • Driving School
  • Job offer - University Researcher, or part-time RA for THE Ma'am Maridel Borja? Actually I'm leaning towards the latter... Ma'am Borja 'yan ihhhh! >.< I wonder how Ma'am Mimi will take it... It feels nice to be fought over though... =3 I'm extremely lucky... People I love work their asses off to get even decent jobs... <3<3
-Beat-
Sooo... life talk with Sir Chris... =))) These decisions... I shouldn't take lightly... Sir Chris talked of knowing yourself... sooo my goals are...
  1. Use of my latent Epidemiology skills before they slip away or something due to unuse
  2. Possible source of a topic for thesis (and IT'S MA'AM BORJA!)
  3. It's a job... with pay (which I'll have to ask Ma'am Borja how much too =3)... Always a plus...
  4. I can still be on schedule (more or less... wait there was one?) with Le Medicine Dream... if they accept me that is... so many people nagging me to go for other colleges din aside from UP Med... *sigh* I wonder what I'll answer if ever they ask my why only UP Med during the interview... yuck papasa hanggang interview! kapal! Asa! -Stop- self degrading myself... not helping anything...
I'd be giving up:
  1. Teaching experience
  2. Sure Biostat and Epi exposure
  3. The last few units of my MS being paid for by UPM
I guess I'm more or less ready to talk to mom... I predict she'll agree with me though... #4 in the first list is her top priority... although #3 in the second list would've been an awesome gift for her...
---EDIT
I was right =))) I have to complete a CV first.
---

I guess I'll stop here... I feel satisfied... and I wanna list down my pasalubong list... Hey this blogging thing is working! ^^

First Post! So I started a blog again...

Yeah... Thought about it again.

Last time I did was waaaaaay back, when Multiply still existed (and... you know, was still a social networking site).

I've been thinking about this for a while now. I wanted to use Google + to post a sort of walkthrough / experiences of LTO - Las Piñas. I had all the layout and images and shiz in my head. I was getting really excited (and yea... bored at the dreaded Lines of Inefficiency while applying for my Student Permit). The whole "Posts in Google + are permanent and searchable in Google" thing was what got me. I wanted a way to record information so more people who need it can access it (without fruitlessly going through my entire timeline manually).

UNLIKE my Multiply posts before, I hope this one survives... AND gets maintained... They say maintaining one of these things is therapeutic for you.
